The Ellis Music Company repair shop consists of five on-site repair technicians with a combined experience of over 50 years. These technicians are specially trained in the repair of all brass and woodwinds instruments from student level up to the professional level. With an average turn around time of one week for normal jobs, our technicians use their skills to ensure timely and efficient repairs.
Repair estimates are free, whether the instrument was purchased from Ellis Music Company or somewhere else. Rental customers can request a loaner instrument to use while their rental instrument is being fixed, which helps to ensure that valuable practice time is not lost.
Our shop utilizes the latest cleaning technology in the industry with our Ultrasonic Cleaner®. This machine uses high-pitched sound waves to remove debris more effectively than by traditional methods. It is also a "greener" approach to cleaning, as the chemicals used are biodegradable, making it safe to the environment, technicians, and most importantly, the customers and their instruments.
Woodwind Repair Terminology
P.C. (Play Condition) – Doing whatever work is needed to get the instrument ready to play. Usually this involves changing pads, corks and minor dent work.
A&R (Adjust and Regulate) – Making sure that pads close together as needed, oiling key mechanisms, and securing loose screws. General labor charge.
Repad – Replacing all the pads and corks, cleaning and polishing the instrument (as needed), providing key fit, and getting the instrument into its best playing condition.
Overhaul – Includes repad, plus stripping down the entire instrument and re-plating or re-lacquering keys.
Brass Repair Terminology
I.C. (Internal Clean) – Removing all slides, pistons, and/or rotors, and using the Ultrasonic Cleaner®. Replace all corks, felts, french horn strings, valve guides, and springs as needed. Lubricate slides, pistons and rotors.
Overhaul – Includes internal clean, plus re-plating or re-lacquering the instrument (including one mouthpiece).
Solder - Reattaching broken pieces on a brass instrument.
Valve Re-fit – Re-plating the valves to ensure a proper fit in the casing.
