The English flageolet was a wooden instrument developed around the year 1800. Over time, it was largely replaced by the tin whistle, which is what this item is. It is pitched in a specific key (and is not chromatic), so a variety of whistles are needed to play in multiple keys. The tin whistle is played similar to the recorder.
